In today’s consumer landscape, the act of shopping has transformed into a battlefield, with scrutiny from all directions on where, when, and how we choose to spend our money. In the midst of this, supporting local small businesses can feel like a quiet rebellion. By opting to buy from local or small businesses, whether in person or online, you are investing in your community, sustainability, and integrity. It’s a way to back businesses that enhance your neighborhood, provide employment for your loved ones, and uphold values that resonate with you.
That’s why my New Year’s Resolution for 2025 is simple: “shop small, or not at all.” I draw inspiration from individuals like Leslie Stephens, who are embarking on a “no buy 2025” challenge – a true test of willpower. Embracing a year of supporting small businesses has been an enriching experience for me. I’ve connected with local community members, unearthed the most amazing moisturizer at a Pennsylvania farmer’s market (you have to call to order – no website!), and acquired art pieces directly from the creators (thank you, Abel!).
As we observe today’s economic blackout, a day dedicated to refraining from shopping at major retailers, I’m excited to highlight a selection of small businesses that have captured my attention recently. I invite you to share your own favorites too. Whether you’re in search of a gift, a unique decor piece, or simply something that brings joy, these emerging businesses offer more than just products – they are pillars of their communities.
