Selecting the perfect rug size for your space can be challenging, especially given the high cost of rugs which can be intimidating. Often, individuals end up buying rugs that are too small, opting for 5×7 or 6×9 sizes over 8×10 or 9×12, resulting in a disjointed and haphazard look for the room. In essence, you end up wasting your money. Tough love, folks.
I’ve compiled a comprehensive guide that includes all my tips, tricks, warnings, and insights on rug buying. I’ll cover the main rug areas – living room, bedroom, dining room (yes, it’s a bit controversial), and hallways. I absolutely adore the impact a rug has on a room. It instantly adds coziness, texture, color, and pattern…or maybe even both 🙂 Let’s kick things off with the living room…
Living Room Rug Guidelines
GENERAL RULES:
- Standard living room rug sizes are 8’x10′ and 9’x12′.
- Ensure your rug is at least 6″ wider (8″ is preferable) than your sofa on both sides.
- Typically, run the rug the length of the sofa.
- Provide 30″ to 36″ of walking space between large furniture pieces (if space allows) or at least 18″-24″. This will help determine the ideal rug size.
