Discussing the best treats to hand feed your pet mice was covered in a previous post, but one common question that arises is how to hand feed them without getting nipped.

It’s important to note that many people refer to this as being “bitten,” but it’s more accurate to understand it as our mouse companions trying to communicate with us.

Understanding Hand Feeding Mice

Mice have poor eyesight compared to humans and rely on their hearing, sense of smell, and whiskers to navigate. From the mouse’s perspective, the urge to grab food quickly due to competition and fear can result in accidental nips.

Therefore, it’s crucial to consider not only what treats we offer our pet mice but also how we feed them. The hand-feeding experience should be positive for both parties.

Tips for Hand Feeding Mice

Mice treats hand feeding

  1. Avoid washing your hands immediately before feeding to prevent strong scents that may confuse mice. Allow 10-15 minutes for any lingering scents to disperse.

  1. Choose foods that are easy to hold to minimize the risk of accidental nips. Processed grains are recommended over whole grains and seeds.

  1. Use small plastic feeding scoops as hand extenders, especially for children assisting with mouse care.

  1. Allow mice to choose their favorite treat to build trust and avoid nips.

  1. Teach mice to lick first to encourage gentle behavior. Start with softer textures like yogurt or pureed fruit.

  1. Train mice that hands are not food by allowing them to interact with your open hand in the cage.

  1. Consistently hand feed your mice to improve their skills and trust in the feeding process.
