Why You Should Let Your Dog Sniff During Walks – 3 Main Reasons

If you are always on the go with a never-ending to-do list, you might find your furry friend’s leisurely pace a bit frustrating. Every dog owner can relate to the struggle of tugging on the leash as your pup stops to sniff every little thing on your walk. However, research suggests that allowing your dog time to explore their surroundings through scent is more beneficial than you may realize. Here are three reasons why you should embrace your dog’s sniffing habits during your next walk.

The 3 Reasons You Should Let Your Dog Sniff on Walks

1. Sniffing on Walks Lets Them Fully Engage with Their Surroundings

While you may see a simple patch of grass, your dog is exploring a world of fascinating scents. A dog’s sense of smell is incredibly powerful, ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 times stronger than a human’s, according to the VCA Hospitals. They can detect everything from another dog in heat to the scent of the mail carrier’s shoes.

2. The Slow Practice Allows Them to Take a Deep Breath

Sniffing has a calming effect on dogs. A joint study conducted by the Laboratory of Research in Canine Ethology in Paris, France, and Barnard College in New York City found that dogs allowed to stop and sniff freely exhibited more positive behaviors compared to dogs who were made to walk continuously. Sniffing can improve your dog’s mood and provide them with a sense of relaxation similar to taking a deep breath of fresh air.

3. It Engages Them Mentally

Allowing your dog to explore the scents on their walk is like giving them a mental puzzle to solve. This mental stimulation is beneficial for their overall well-being. Sniffing requires concentration and focus, making it a mentally engaging activity for your furry companion. According to dog trainer Staci Lemke, even a short walk with plenty of sniffing can tire out your dog’s brain as much as a longer, uninterrupted walk.

Final Thoughts

While you may view sniffing as a time-consuming activity, it is essential for your dog’s mental and emotional well-being. Just like humans, dogs benefit from mental stimulation and relaxation. Sniffing on walks allows them to explore, relax, and stay informed about their environment. It may be the highlight of their day! Remember to balance sniffing time with physical exercise to keep your pup healthy and happy.
