As a horse owner, it is your responsibility to ensure the overall well-being of your horse. From physical health to mental and emotional well-being, you play a crucial role in meeting all of your horse’s needs. Whether it’s refilling the feeder, keeping the stock tank full, or taking care of his dental health, the care you provide is essential. TEN NON-NEGOTIABLES OF HORSE MANAGEMENT

1. Follow a regular vaccination schedule. Consult with your vet to determine the appropriate vaccinations for your horse based on your location and travel plans.

2. Introduce feed changes gradually to prevent colic. It is recommended to transition to new feed over a period of two weeks.

3. Provide social interaction for your horse. Horses thrive on companionship and benefit from being around other horses to learn herd dynamics.

4. Feed your horse frequently throughout the day to mimic natural grazing patterns.

5. Schedule regular visits with the farrier or trimmer to maintain your horse’s hoof health.

6. Ensure your horse receives regular dental care to prevent issues with eating and overall health.

7. Implement a pest management program to protect your horse from flies and other insects.

8. Establish a deworming schedule with guidance from your vet to prevent parasite infestations.

9. Provide clean and abundant water for your horse at all times, especially during hot weather.

10. Allow your horse ample turnout time to promote movement and prevent stiffness.

Going Beyond the Basics

While these 10 points are essential for proper horse management, there are additional ways to enhance your horse’s quality of life based on his individual needs and your specific situation. As responsible horse owners, it is our duty to provide the best care possible for these incredible animals.
