Repeated exposure to urine, whether from forceful urination or dribbling during heat cycles, can cause bleaching and damage to a mare’s tail, resulting in dry and brittle locks.

Mare Care Tail Tips:

Regularly caring for your mare’s tail is crucial to prevent skin irritation, odor, and buildup that can lead to discomfort and infections. Routine grooming not only maintains tail health but also enhances circulation and overall comfort for your mare.

To rejuvenate your mare’s tail, start by washing and conditioning the affected area, then soak the locks in white vinegar or a demineralizer to remove mineral buildup and restore the hair’s appearance. This process also helps seal the hair cuticle, reducing the likelihood of urine absorption in the future.

Don’t forget to clean the tail dock to remove dirt and buildup.

After the initial treatment, give the tail a full wash, condition, and rinse. Using a leave-in conditioner can help prevent urine stains until the next bath. For long-term care, consider braiding or wrapping the tail to keep it clean, ensuring not to tie it too tightly or leave it wrapped for extended periods. Remember to wash the tail wraps regularly.
