If you’ve always wanted a cat but have allergies, there are ways to alleviate your symptoms and still enjoy the company of a feline friend. It’s important to keep your home clean and maintain good personal hygiene to minimize exposure to allergens. Here are some tips for living with a cat when you’re allergic:

#1 – Keep your house clean

Cat allergies are triggered by a protein in their dander and saliva, not necessarily their hair. To reduce symptoms, it’s important to minimize dander accumulation by keeping your home clean. This includes switching to smooth surfaces that can be easily dusted, using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, and possibly investing in an air purifier with a HEPA filter. These measures can help reduce the presence of allergens in your home.

#2- Keep your hands clean

Frequent hand washing, especially after petting your cat, can help prevent allergens from spreading and reduce your symptoms.

#3 – Keep your cat wiped down

While giving your cat a bath may not be practical, wiping them down with pet wipes can help remove dander and reduce allergens in your home.

#4 – Try medication

For mild allergies, over-the-counter medications may provide relief. If needed, prescription medications or allergy shots can also help manage symptoms over time.

It’s important to consider these tips before bringing a cat into your home, especially if you have allergies. By taking proactive measures to reduce allergens and maintain good hygiene, you can enjoy a harmonious relationship with your feline companion.
