Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, a place better known for skyscrapers than show pens, I never envisioned horses would play such a significant role in my life. Prior to discovering IHSA, my exposure to the equine industry was minimal. Taking a leap of faith into something entirely new at Black Hawk College not only shaped my college experience but also boosted my confidence, work ethic, and future aspirations.
Finding Horses Through IHSA
Joining the IHSA Western team was a game-changer for me. What initially meant stepping out of my comfort zone quickly transformed into treasured memories and experiences that will stay with me forever. IHSA provided me with opportunities I never thought possible—from mastering the basics to competing alongside exceptionally talented riders from all corners of the country. The unique environment, where effort and attitude hold as much weight as experience, made it all the more special for me.
Last year, I had the privilege of competing on the national championship team as a beginner rider, an experience that still feels surreal. This moment was pivotal for me, considering I had never shown before IHSA. I owe a great deal to my coaches, Rebekah Irish and Olivia Henning. Their unwavering support, patience, and belief in me from the start have been invaluable, playing a crucial role in shaping me into the rider I am today.
Competing at the 2026 IHSA National Championship
Returning to IHSA Nationals in 2026 felt entirely different in the best possible way. This year, I competed individually and secured third place in the Beginner division, a feat I am truly grateful for. Our team also clinched third place overall, and I couldn’t be prouder of the team I was a part of. Every individual showed up, gave their all, and made the experience truly unforgettable.
The Best Memories Happened Outside the Show Pen
Some of my fondest memories from this year had nothing to do with the actual competition. They stemmed from the people. Whether it was impromptu speed-walking contests with riders and coaches from other teams before the parade of teams, or witnessing both Black Hawk College and the University of Findlay teams speed-walk back to their groups during awards, these were the moments that made us all grateful for the present. While seemingly trivial, these moments left us in stitches and created lasting memories.
Why IHSA Means So Much to Me
This is what makes IHSA so dear to me. It’s not just about rankings—it’s about the camaraderie, the teamwork, and witnessing the fruits of your labor on a grand stage. Every individual plays a part, and every ride counts. Being part of a supportive and driven group amplifies the significance of the experience.
This year served as a reminder of why I hold IHSA in such high regard. It’s not merely about ribbons or accolades—it’s about the experiences and memories that stay with you long after the competition ends. It’s about pushing your limits, adapting to challenges, and cherishing every opportunity presented to you. It’s the early mornings, the pre-competition jitters, the friendships forged, the laughter shared, and the sense of achievement that transcends personal boundaries.
For someone with minimal horse experience entering IHSA, I never fathomed where this journey would lead me. And truthfully, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
