My Weird Money Philosophy On Shopping for Art And Decor For Our Kids’ Rooms

Recently, I shared a story on Instagram that sparked a lively discussion about kids and my approach to money. I wanted to bring this conversation to all of you, as I know you are passionate about design. Decorating my kids’ rooms has been a joy, with my daughter Elliot, 10, eagerly participating and my son, 12, showing some interest but also expressing concerns about it looking too “designer-y.” As I navigate this process, I’ve realized that while I have fears about spoiling them, I also enjoy investing in their space.

Involving Kids in Furniture Choices

While I let my kids have a say in furniture decisions, I’ve learned to guide them when it comes to choosing investment pieces. I present them with a few options that align with their current needs and will have longevity. This way, I can ensure the furniture fits the room’s aesthetic and quality standards without compromising on their preferences.

Empowering Kids to Choose Paint Colors

When it comes to paint colors, I give my kids the freedom to choose, with some guidance based on my experience. I’ve learned from past mistakes, like using permanent wallpaper, that kids’ preferences can change. While my daughter opted for a semi-muted purple for her room, we both discovered how the color appears differently under various lighting conditions. This experience has taught us valuable lessons about color perception and the importance of considering the overall impact of paint choices.

Encouraging Kids to Love Their Space

Art and decor play a significant role in personalizing a room and reflecting individual style, especially for kids. I believe involving them in the design process helps create a space they can truly call their own. While this level of involvement may not be for everyone, I cherish the opportunity to collaborate with my kids on decorating their rooms.

In terms of financial responsibility, we have established a system where our kids use their own money for items they “want,” while we cover their essential needs. By assigning chores and providing opportunities for earning money, we’ve instilled a sense of accountability and independence in them. This approach has proven effective in reducing complaints and fostering a better understanding of financial management.

Cultivating a Love for Vintage Shopping

Introducing kids to vintage shopping can be a rewarding experience that strengthens family bonds. While some may view this approach as manipulative, I see it as a way to share my passion with my children and create lasting memories together. By providing them with the means to explore antique shops and flea markets, I hope to instill in them an appreciation for unique finds and the thrill of treasure hunting.

To make the vintage shopping experience enjoyable, I offer them a budget or purchase items that catch their interest. This not only encourages their creativity but also builds their confidence in selecting decor pieces. Through these outings, I aim to foster a positive association with vintage shopping and create opportunities for them to explore their personal style.

Promoting an Appreciation for Art and Design

I believe that exposing kids to art, vintage, and contemporary design can broaden their perspectives and nurture their creativity. By supporting local artists and exploring vintage markets, I hope to instill in them a sense of value for craftsmanship and individual expression. These experiences not only enrich their understanding of art but also encourage them to appreciate the beauty of unique and handmade pieces.

Fostering a Love for Antiques and Makers

Visiting stores that offer a mix of maker goods and vintage items can be a delightful experience for kids. By exploring places like Urbanite, Cargo, Stars, and Aurora, they can discover a diverse range of artistic creations and curated vintage pieces. I believe that supporting these local businesses not only benefits our home decor but also contributes to the preservation of craftsmanship and creativity in our community.

Embracing the Value of Art

Investing in art, whether from contemporary artists or vintage dealers, is a meaningful way to enhance our living spaces and support creative talents. While mass-market retailers offer convenient and affordable options, I believe that purchasing art from local artists or vintage sources adds a unique touch to our homes and contributes to the artistic community. By exposing my kids to a variety of art forms and encouraging them to appreciate craftsmanship, I hope to instill in them a lifelong love for creativity and self-expression.

Each family has its own approach to decorating and spending within their means. For me, sharing the experience of vintage shopping with my kids and investing in personalized pieces for their rooms brings me immense joy and fulfillment.
