Upon retirement, I have a plan for a weekly activity that brings me joy and a little extra cash – visiting homes to edit, curate, and restyle before saying goodbye like a fairy god-Styler. It’s incredibly fulfilling. Nic and Curtis were unsure about hanging their art in their new dark basement for their almost teen girls, but I confidently took on the challenge. After taking inventory and ordering some new sconces, poufs, pillows, and a fake plant, Gretchen and I transformed the space in just one day.
The Basement Before:

The space started with a large leather sectional, white lacquer furniture, and a vintage chair, all leftovers from their old basement. We managed to make them work without investing much money, and the wall-to-wall carpet was a standout feature.

They had a collection of art ready to be displayed, and we even borrowed some pieces from other rooms to create a fun, graphic, and youthful space perfect for tweens.

One Day Later…

Wall Color | Scones | Art (homeowner’s) | Carpet
The new space exudes a moody and cozy atmosphere. The challenge of integrating the sconces into the gallery wall without symmetry was overcome by strategically balancing the shapes, colors, and orientations of the art pieces. The addition of poufs provided extra seating for kids and completed the space.

Above the credenza, we carefully styled more art to maintain balance in the room. By utilizing items they already owned, such as board games, we achieved a minimal yet inviting look.

The sconces were a versatile addition that provided mood lighting without overpowering the room. Their articulation and plug-in feature allowed for easy adjustments if needed.

The room’s dark and cozy ambiance is complemented by pops of pink and white, creating a youthful and nostalgic space filled with unique pieces.
