Exploring Latin American Designers and Artisans
As someone of Latino heritage, the events since January 20, 2025, have weighed heavily on my heart. Despite being born in Florida and considering myself American, the current situation has made me acutely aware of how being of Latino descent can lead to feeling marginalized in this country.
The sight of Latino immigrants, especially children, being detained and separated from their families is deeply saddening. The dehumanization of these individuals, who could easily be my family members, is disturbing. The insensitivity of the White House, as exemplified by the trivialization of these issues on social media, only adds to the pain.
In response to these troubling times, I decided to shift the narrative and focus on celebrating Latin American designers and artisans. Despite my own heritage, I realized that I was not as familiar with Latin designers as I should be. This led me to dig deeper and discover a range of talented individuals who are shaping the design world.
According to statistics from the International Interior Design Association, only 3% of designers in the US identify as Hispanic, highlighting a lack of representation in the industry. This low number underscores the importance of bringing visibility to Latin American creatives and their contributions to design.
Through my research, I came across a diverse group of designers and artists who are making waves in the design world. From Lucia Galeón of Studio Galeón to Erick Garcia of Maison Trouvaille, each individual brings a unique perspective and style to their work.
These creators, ranging from interior designers to product designers, showcase the rich cultural heritage and innovative spirit of Latin American design. By highlighting their work, I hope to inspire others to explore and appreciate the creativity and talent present in our community.
