Uses for Aquaphor for Dogs

Aquaphor, a petroleum jelly-based moisturizer, can be beneficial for dogs in various ways. Here are some common uses:

  • Paw Pad Hyperkeratosis: Excess keratin production in the paw pads can cause thickening and hardening of the skin, leading to cracking and sores. Applying Aquaphor can soften the skin and provide relief.
  • Prevent Nappy Rash: Protect your dog’s skin from irritation and inflammation caused by urine or fecal scalding with a layer of Aquaphor.
  • Dry Noses: Cracked and dry skin around the nose can be painful for dogs. Aquaphor can help moisturize and soften the skin.
  • Minor Burns: For small burns, applying Aquaphor can aid in healing by lifting dead skin and promoting recovery.
  • Pressure Sores and Calluses: Aquaphor can be used to soften and moisturize areas with pressure sores or calluses, providing comfort for your dog.

Pressure Sores and Calluses

Dogs spend a lot of time lying down and can develop calluses over their bony parts, like the point of the elbow from laying on hard surfaces. In most cases, lying down won’t cause irritation or any adverse effects, but if your dog lies on abrasive surfaces or in the same position for too long, it can eventually lead to pressure sores. This is more common in older and immobile dogs because they won’t get up to turn over or change position.

If your dog is just starting to develop pressure sores or calluses, you can apply Aquaphor to soften the skin. While calluses won’t harm your dog, pressure sores can lead to open wounds which can get infected and require veterinary treatment.

Other Home Remedies for Dogs

Aquaphor isn’t the only remedy you likely have lying around the house. Consider the following for minor complaints:

1. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea can be used externally to soothe minor rashes and skin irritation. It is safe for dogs and won’t cause any harm if licked off.

2. Epsom Salts

Epsom salts can be beneficial for pets, helping to treat wounds and swelling. However, ensure your dog is checked by a vet first to determine the severity of the injury.

3. Oatmeal

Oatmeal, specifically colloidal oatmeal, can help soothe itchy skin and is gentle enough not to cause additional irritation for your dog. Grind oatmeal yourself, mix it with water, and apply it to dry and itchy skin areas.

Is It Okay If My Dog Licks Aquaphor?

Aquaphor is non-toxic, so if your dog licks it off, it shouldn’t cause any ill effects. However, if a large amount is consumed, it might cause diarrhea or vomiting, requiring veterinary treatment.

Can I Put Aquaphor on My Dog’s Open Wound?

Aquaphor can be used on minor wounds, but for more serious injuries, it’s best to consult a vet first.

Conclusion

Aquaphor is a safe and effective option for treating dry and cracked skin on dogs. It can be applied to affected areas to provide soothing relief. Just make sure it has time to soak in before it rubs off.
