Assess and rank these performance geldings based on conformation. Then compare your evaluations with those of our expert judge.

From the Judge

These performance geldings make up a strong class. When judging, I prioritize overall balance and structural correctness, focusing on categories like balance, correctness, breed and sex characteristics, and muscling. A well-balanced and correctly structured horse is more likely to excel athletically and remain sound. Additionally, a horse’s overall attractiveness and presence can make a difference. I look for horses with good body conformation, substantial bone, soft eyes, and well-set ears, all of which contribute to their quality and trainability.

Check your answers, below!

Gelding C
This athletic-looking gelding exhibits excellent balance and structural correctness, with a strong topline, clean throatlatch, and well-defined muscling. His legs are well-boned and correctly angled, making him a promising performance horse.

Gelding B
While attractive, this gelding falls behind in topline strength and loin support compared to the top-placing horse. His shoulder angle is steeper, affecting his overall symmetry and athleticism.

Gelding A
This gelding shows structural correctness issues, with a weak topline and light muscling. His conformation may limit his performance capabilities, particularly in hind end engagement.
