About a year ago, I came across a planter table at HomeGoods that immediately caught my attention. However, at that time, our deck was still under construction and the table didn’t quite fit my style. So, I took a picture to keep as inspiration for the future. Fast forward to this year, and with our new beautiful back deck completed, I finally had the perfect spot for it. That’s when we decided to build our very own DIY Rustic Two Tier Herb Planter!
The inspiration piece from HomeGoods was adorable, but I wanted to give mine a bit more character. I envisioned a weathered finish that looked like it had been sitting outside for years. Read on to see how we achieved this rustic look!
There are many ways to build this table, but this was our process – with a few bumps along the way that added even more character!
HOW TO BUILD A TWO TIER HERB PLANTER
SUPPLIES
- 6 1x6x6 pre-treated boards
- 4 2x4s
- Metal braces
- Off-white creamy paint
- Gel stain
Step 1
We cut our boards to a length of 5 feet. Since our planer was limited in width, we glued two boards together, planed them, and repeated the process for the third board.
Step 2
We marked out and drew holes for the pots on the boards, ensuring they fit the pots we had chosen.
We repeated this process for all 8 pots.
Step 3
To provide stability, we attached metal braces underneath the boards, between the circles.
Step 4
We used a jigsaw to cut out the holes for the pots, starting with a hole drilled inside the circle.
Step 5
Building the legs required some creativity. We notched out sections of the 2x4s to allow the other boards to fit snugly. This unique design added to the rustic charm of the planter.
For the finishing touches, we stained the table with a gel stain and sealed it with Varathane’s Spar Urethane for exterior use.
Now, the herb planter is ready to be filled with an assortment of herbs, adding both beauty and functionality to our deck!
This DIY project turned out even better than expected, and I can’t wait to enjoy fresh herbs for all my summer recipes. The rustic finish adds a unique charm to our deck, making it a truly special addition to our outdoor space!
For added support, we also attached additional 2x4s under the middle section of the table to prevent any sagging once the pots were in place.
With the herb planter complete, it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of our labor – both in the form of fresh herbs and the beauty it adds to our outdoor space!
