This post is a part of our Navigating Equine Arthritis Awareness Campaign, sponsored by American Regent Animal Health.

Arthritis is a common concern for horse owners, especially those with performance horses. The strain from training, competition, and daily activities can lead to arthritis over time. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to prevent arthritis and maintain the joint health of your equine athlete. Here are five simple ways to support joint health and prevent arthritis:

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Excess weight can strain the joints and increase the risk of arthritis. Ensure your horse maintains a healthy weight through a balanced diet and tailored exercise regimen. Consult with a vet or equine nutritionist to create a feeding plan that supports optimal body condition without stressing the joints. An overweight horse is at risk for various issues, including joint strain.

Regular Exercise and Conditioning

Consistent and appropriate exercise is crucial for maintaining joint health and muscle strength in performance horses. Implement a well-rounded training program that includes warm-up and cool-down routines. Vary the workouts to prevent repetitive strain and allow for sufficient rest periods for joint recovery. Gradual conditioning helps build resilient joints and reduces the risk of arthritis-related problems. Build your horse’s stamina over time and always include a proper warm-up to prepare the joints for exercise.

Quality Hoof Care

Proper hoof care is essential for overall joint health in horses. Regular trimming, shoeing, and monitoring for any signs of lameness or imbalance can prevent joint stress and injuries that may contribute to arthritis. Work with a reliable farrier to ensure your horse’s hooves are well-maintained and balanced. This will provide a solid foundation for sound movement and reduced joint strain.

Nutritional Support

Including joint supplements in your horse’s diet can offer targeted support for joint health. Look for supplements with ingredients like glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and omega-3 fatty acids, known for their anti-inflammatory and joint-protective properties. Consult with your vet to determine the most suitable supplement regimen based on your horse’s needs and workload.

Regular Check-ups

Regular vet exams are crucial for early arthritis detection and prevention. Schedule routine check-ups for your performance horse to monitor joint health, identify any signs of discomfort or stiffness, and discuss preventive measures with your vet. Early intervention and proactive management can help slow the progression of arthritis and ensure your horse’s long-term soundness and performance.

More Ways to Help

Constant Movement. Maintaining motion is crucial for joint health. Regular exercise tailored to your horse’s comfort and athletic level is essential to keep him limber. In addition to riding, provide ample pasture turnout for your horse.

Good Ground. Working your horse on good footing with a solid, even surface helps prevent missteps and reduces stress on the joints. Avoid slippery or hard surfaces, especially when trail riding.

Stalling. If your horse is stabled on concrete, use quality stall mats and sufficient bedding for cushioning to reduce strain on the legs.
