How Skin Barrier Repair at Every Age Leads to Beautiful, Healthy Skin

Dr. Doris Day, MD, a New York dermatologist and co-author of the book “Rebooting the Biome” with genetic scientist Thomas M. Hitchcock, PhD, emphasizes the importance of understanding the skin microbiome in maintaining beautiful and healthy skin. She explains that the skin microbiome consists of various microorganisms that interact with skin cells to regulate pH, produce antimicrobial peptides, and promote skin cell turnover. These microorganisms also produce lipids essential for maintaining the integrity of the skin barrier.

Maintaining a healthy skin barrier is crucial in protecting the skin from external stressors such as UV radiation, pollution, and bacteria. Dr. Day recommends focusing on biome care in addition to traditional skincare, as it involves maintaining a balance of microorganisms that naturally inhabit the skin. A diverse and healthy skin biome can help hydrate the skin, reduce inflammation, and prevent wrinkles.

To maintain a healthy microbiome, Dr. Day advises against over-washing, as it can strip away the skin’s natural oils and damage the skin biome. In terms of skincare recommendations, she suggests using topicals like salicylic acid and retinoids for those in their 20s and adopting a diet rich in vegetables and healthy fats. As individuals reach their 40s and 50s, Dr. Day recommends using products that protect the biome, hydrating the skin, and incorporating antioxidants and growth factors into skincare routines.

Innovative approaches to improving skin barrier health include targeting mTORC2, a master switch for skin health and renewal. Activating mTORC2 can boost lipid production and hydration, strengthening the skin’s protective barrier. The new mTOR modulator, RLX-201, shows promise in enhancing cellular renewal, barrier repair, and overall skin resilience.

Looking ahead, Dr. Day predicts that more companies will focus on developing products that support the skin biome directly, leading to a new era of microbiome-friendly skincare. Our skincare line is dedicated to maintaining the delicate balance of microbes on our skin, allowing them to thrive and contribute to a radiant and youthful appearance. Rather than trying to eliminate them, we seek to support and enhance their beneficial effects. Brands like Biojuve and LaRoche Posay, which incorporate skin probiotics, have also made significant strides in preserving and improving the skin biome.
