Two years ago, at this time, I shared the story of my rental kitchen makeover. The journey from “before” to “after” was documented over several months, with a significant transformation involving my appliances. When my family first moved in, we had a mix of mismatched appliances – a partially broken white electric-coil range, an old black dishwasher, and a small white apartment-style fridge. None of these appliances were suitable for our needs.
It took nearly a year to find affordable secondhand kitchen appliances that fit my requirements. The highlight was finding a counter-depth refrigerator, a challenging task due to specific limitations in terms of size. Our countertops were designed with a slight overhang, making it impossible to accommodate a standard 36-inch width model. This led to the need for a counter-depth fridge.

Reflecting on my kitchen reveal, I shared the exhilaration of finally finding a fridge that met all my requirements. However, after 700-plus days, do I still love it? Am I still happy with it? The answer is a bit complicated, and that’s what I’ll delve into today.

Understanding Counter-Depth Fridges
A counter-depth fridge matches the depth of a standard kitchen countertop, typically ranging from 24 to 30 inches. In contrast, a standard depth fridge is 30 to 36 inches deep, extending beyond the countertops. The choice between the two depends on personal needs and preferences.
Having grown up with built-in cabinet boxes for standard-depth fridges, I was accustomed to a specific look. However, the trend towards counter-depth fridges with a seamless line has gained popularity. For those seeking alternatives, placing the fridge in floor-to-ceiling cupboards without counter space is an option.
My Experience with a Counter-Depth Fridge
My journey with a counter-depth fridge has been a mix of pros and cons. While the fridge fits perfectly and doesn’t protrude into the kitchen, the reduced cubic storage space has been a challenge. With a family of three and a need for ample groceries, the limitations of a counter-depth fridge have become apparent over time.
Despite the initial excitement of finding the perfect fridge, the practicality of its size has posed obstacles. The decreased storage capacity and limited model options have been notable drawbacks. Looking ahead, a larger fridge would better suit my cooking needs and lifestyle.
