I have a bold statement to make amongst friends – I’m really loving a new style that I believe could be the new Modern Farmhouse. It’s not about replacing the popular shiplap-clad look, but it definitely has the potential to steal the spotlight.
Before I reveal the name of this style, let’s take a step back for a moment. As someone who adores interior design, I often find myself falling in love with various styles. However, having a mish-mash of different aesthetics in my 1,500 square feet home isn’t my ideal. So, when I come across a new style that resonates with me, I start envisioning how it would look in my space.
This project by Jessica Helgerson Interior Design (photographed by Aaron Leitz) perfectly encapsulates the style I believe is on the verge of becoming a design trend. It exudes richness, warmth, and timelessness, making it more than just a passing trend.
This “new” Modern Farmhouse style combines elements of mid-century modern and contemporary design without being overly trendy. It strikes the perfect balance between colorful, eclectic, and soothing. It’s family-friendly, evokes a sense of a beach vacation, and has hints of various influences from around the world.
This style, which I’m tentatively calling Warm Modern Beach Bungalow (or WMBB for short), is a refreshing departure from the cottagecore trend that has been dominating the design scene. It embraces primary colors and offers a sense of simplicity and warmth that is truly captivating.
If you’re familiar with my design preferences, you might be surprised by my enthusiasm for this style. But sometimes, a change is needed, and this style seems to offer just that – a perfect blend of comfort and style without overwhelming the senses.
Let’s dive into the key elements that define the Warm Modern Beach Bungalow aesthetic and why it has captured my attention:
#1: Neutral Wood Paneling on the Walls & Ceiling (and Everywhere)
The use of natural, neutral wood paneling sets the foundation for this style. It adds warmth and character to the space without overpowering it. The choice of wood with subtle undertones creates a timeless look that is both inviting and enduring.
While wood surfaces require maintenance, they bring a sense of beauty and tranquility to the space. The richness of wood paneling adds a depth that paint or wallpaper cannot achieve.
#2: Bold, Primary Colors
Primary colors like red, blue, and yellow are making a comeback in a big way. When used strategically, these colors can enliven a space without overwhelming it. The balance of bright colors with neutral elements creates a vibrant yet harmonious look.
These bold colors add personality and charm to a space, creating a focal point that draws the eye and adds visual interest.
#3: Subtle Styling
One of the hallmarks of Warm Modern Beach Bungalow style is its minimalistic yet stylish approach to decor. The emphasis is on clean lines, simple forms, and a clutter-free environment. This creates a sense of calm and elegance, making the space feel inviting and relaxing.
This simplicity allows the design elements to shine and creates a tranquil atmosphere that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
#4: Floor-to-Ceiling Shelving
Warm Modern Beach Bungalow style often incorporates floor-to-ceiling shelving, providing ample space for books, decor, and personal items. This built-in storage solution not only adds functionality but also adds visual interest to the space.
These shelves not only provide storage but also serve as a design feature, showcasing books, decor items, and personal mementos.
#5: Built-In Storage or Reading Nooks
Another key element of Warm Modern Beach Bungalow style is the incorporation of built-in storage and reading nooks. These custom details add character and functionality to the space, creating cozy corners for reading, relaxing, or simply enjoying the surroundings.
These cozy nooks provide a retreat within the home, perfect for unwinding with a good book or simply enjoying a moment of peace and quiet.
In conclusion, the Warm Modern Beach Bungalow style offers a refreshing take on interior design, combining warmth, simplicity, and a touch of eclectic charm. It’s a style that feels inviting, timeless, and perfect for creating a peaceful and stylish home environment.
