I am a new person. Transformed! The fact that there aren’t more before/after shows for the “chronically disorganized” (me!) is a real missed TV opportunity. Now, I do give myself grace because the amount of stuff one has to have to do this job, run this company, and create so much design content so frequently is extreme (occupational hazard – just the way it is). And even with a team of people, it’s impossible to keep it organized unless you have what we now have – a dedicated space, with IKEA shelving and cabinets, labels, color-coded shelves, THE WORKS. 2019 – The BEFORE before
When we bought the property, this was the garage – full of potential and spiders/dampness. We always knew that one of the perks of buying the property with so many outbuildings would be that we could have prop storage within reach (crucial to running the business), but not when they looked like this…

This table has served us well for pulling props and packing them up, but it has also become a meeting spot for us while the kids have been running wild all summer. Surprisingly, it’s peaceful and quiet out here. While it may not be our year-round studio, it’s a nice change from always working in my sunroom and provides some much-needed separation (we work from home unless we have meetings or shoots).
Recently, there have been concerns about the strength of the IKEA PAX units for garage storage. Some comments suggest they may not be sturdy enough for heavy items. While we haven’t had any issues so far, we’ve decided to disperse some heavier items based on this feedback. For heavier garage storage, it might be better to opt for IKEA kitchen cabinetry.
In our prop house, we’ve organized everything neatly and efficiently. The labels have been a game-changer in keeping things in order. The IKEA organizers have worked well for flatware storage.
Our garage is now a hub of organized chaos, with shelves filled with props and decor items waiting to be used in future projects. The space is a mix of vintage finds and modern pieces from popular brands.
After a thorough purge, we’ve managed to organize everything by color, creating a visually appealing display. Lamp Land houses all our lighting fixtures, art pieces, and fabrics.
The shelves filled with various items bring me immense joy and excitement for future projects. With everything neatly organized, I can easily visualize how each item can be used in upcoming designs. The selection process was rigorous, but everything ultimately made the cut for the garage organization project. From lamps to baskets, small pots to large vessels, each item found its place with visual clarity.
Fabric bins lined the bottom row, designed to fit snugly side by side with vinyl windows for easy visibility. Despite appearing squished, these bins efficiently stored a vast amount of items.
Art dividers, including rolling carts, were a standout feature in the garage. These dividers, sourced from Amazon, provided a sense of accomplishment and protection for valuable art pieces.
The garage boasted Clopay garage doors that operated quietly and added a touch of elegance when closed. Leaving the doors open allowed for a cool environment, perfect for escaping the summer heat.
A cadet heater was installed for winter use, ensuring that the space stayed above a certain temperature to prevent damage to the stored artwork.
The team’s hard work and dedication, along with the assistance of Afore, contributed to the beautiful transformation of the garages. A YouTube video showcased the full tour of the renovated space, offering a glimpse into the contents of the cabinets.
