When it comes to interior design, placing a bed in front of a window is often seen as a design challenge. However, it can actually look amazing if done right. I recently helped my friends set up their new room, and we had to place the bed in front of the window. This inspired me to share some insights and rules of thumb on this topic.
The “Standard” Height Window
For windows with a standard height, it’s essential to choose a low headboard that doesn’t block too much light. Consider the height of the headboard and aim to cover only the bottom third of the window for an ideal balance.
The Floor-to-Ceiling Window
Tall windows offer more flexibility in headboard height. To maintain a balanced look, keep the headboard height to the bottom third of the window. Also, ensure that your window treatments have enough space to open and close freely.
The Off-Center Window
Dealing with an off-center window can be tricky. Aim to block only the bottom third of the window with your headboard. Consider the amount of natural light the window brings in when making your design choices.
The Overlapping “Framing” Windows
If your bed sits between two windows, choose a low-height headboard or one with a shape that doesn’t overlap the windows too much. Consider non-rectangular headboard shapes for a unique and intentional look.
The Slightly Elevated Window
With a window elevated off the ground, you may not need to block it at all. Opt for a Roman shade for window treatments in this scenario. This setup can create a stylish and functional bedroom design.
Placing your bed in front of a window can be a design opportunity rather than a limitation. Consider the unique features of your windows and room layout to create a balanced and visually appealing bedroom.
