After months of hard work and disruption, our modern European inspired kitchen renovation is finally complete! The transformation from our dated 90s kitchen to this beautiful new space was well worth the effort. The heart of our home has been restored, and we can now enjoy cooking, eating, and gathering in this stunning new kitchen.
Our Dated 90s Kitchen (The Before)
We started with a kitchen stuck in the 90s, with red and black colors dominating the space. A budget-friendly update involving painting the cabinets, adding trim, and changing the lighting helped improve the look. But after five years, it was time for a complete overhaul to create our dream kitchen.
The During
In 2021, we decided it was time for a major update to align the kitchen with the rest of our home. Working with a local custom cabinet maker, we embarked on a journey to create a kitchen that blended seamlessly with our contemporary style. After careful planning and design, the renovation began, and we were excited to see our vision come to life.
The Kitchen Plans
Collaborating with the cabinet maker, we finalized the design and layout of the kitchen. Computer renderings helped us visualize the space and make informed decisions about finishes and colors. With a meticulous attention to detail, the renovation progressed, and we aimed to create a kitchen that felt both new and lived-in.

Why We Chose Stained Wood Kitchen Cabinets
From the beginning, we knew stained wood cabinets would bring warmth and balance to our home. Inspired by our original oak trim, we opted for a darker wood to create a cohesive look throughout the kitchen. The choice of stained wood added depth and richness to the space.
The Wood Cabinet Design
Utilizing hard white maple plywood in a slip matched pattern, the custom cabinet fronts were designed to provide a clean, linear look with minimal movement in the wood grain. Inspired by a design from Jean Stoffer Home, the cabinet fronts were crafted to be versatile and timeless in any style of home.
The choice of dark walnut gel stain brought a warm and rich color to the cabinets, complementing the white maple wood beautifully. The addition of simple crown molding and arched toe kicks added a touch of elegance and custom detail to the cabinets.
