A mysterious and potentially deadly respiratory illness is affecting dogs in various states across the United States, with some even succumbing to the illness.

Reports from TODAY indicate that the illness initially presents as a persistent cough, but can progress into severe pneumonia, resistant to typical treatments like antibiotics. This leaves dogs struggling to breathe and in critical condition.

Aside from coughing, the Oregon Department of Agriculture has reported additional symptoms such as sneezing, eye or nasal discharge, breathing difficulties, and fatigue.

Owners who notice any of these symptoms in their pets are advised to seek immediate veterinary attention.

Dr. Lindsey Ganzer, a veterinarian from Colorado, emphasized the rapid progression of the illness, noting the sudden development of pneumonia following a persistent cough.

Dr. Ganzer shared that her clinic has treated over 30 dogs with this mysterious illness since mid-October, most of whom had recent exposure to boarding facilities or doggy daycares.

She highlighted that the illness spreads through close contact with infected dogs, making places like dog parks, daycares, and grooming facilities high-risk environments.

Dr. Gina Kettig from VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver expressed concern over the increasing number of cases and the need for strict isolation protocols.

Veterinarians in several states, including Oregon, Colorado, New Hampshire, California, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, Georgia, Florida, and Pennsylvania, have reported cases matching the description of this mysterious illness.

NBC News reported on the identification of a potential pathogen linked to the illness by researchers at the University of New Hampshire.

This newly identified germ was found in genetic samples from infected dogs in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, indicating a possible connection to the mysterious illness.

Dr. David Needle from the University of New Hampshire highlighted the significance of this discovery but emphasized the need for further research to confirm the pathogen’s role in the illness.

As investigations continue, veterinarians advise dog owners to take precautions, such as limiting contact with other dogs and following the guidelines provided by the Oregon Department of Agriculture to safeguard their pets.
