Exciting news! I can’t wait to share the complete transformation of our swing set with you. You might have caught glimpses of it on my Instagram, but now I’m revealing the whole process. We found a swing set for the kids on Facebook Marketplace after realizing how expensive they can be. Luckily, our babysitter had one to spare, just in need of a few repairs. And so began our new project!
BEFORE PHOTOS
The swing set was still in good shape structurally, with only a few rotted boards needing replacement.
REPAIR THE ROOF
We started by replacing the old roof, covered in moss, with new plywood and roofing felt for protection. Using a Hammer Tack tool, we secured the felt with staples instead of nails to prevent any injuries. The shingles were installed from the bottom up in an offset brick pattern, with spare pieces finishing the peak.
For the shingles, we used Varathane Dark Walnut Gel Stain and Spar Urethane for a durable finish.
PAINTING AND STAINING
The swing set was power washed before painting to remove dirt and dust. The roof was painted to match our house color, while the rest was painted with a brush for detailed coverage. The ladder was stained in a dark wood color, and brass accents were added by spray painting the handles.
NEW WOOD SWINGS
We made a baby swing from stakes for durability and aesthetics. The big kid swings, though initially slippery, were refinished with Varathane Dark Walnut Gel Stain and Spar Urethane for longevity.
PAVERS + POLYMERIC SAND
In place of a sandbox, we created a seating area with leftover pavers. Polymeric Sand by Techniseal was used to fill the cracks and joints, providing a solid foundation.
PICNIC TABLE
A mini kids picnic table stained to match the swings and ladder was placed under the swing set. This addition, along with a custom sign engraved with Eloise’s handwriting, completed the look.
FINISHING TOUCHES
Details like a wooden flower box, shelves for playthings, and solar string lights were added to enhance the space. These small touches not only make me happy but also create a special place for the kids to enjoy.
The Super Club is now open for business, and the kids are already loving their new swing set. It’s a special place for them to create lasting memories, and all the hard work and attention to detail are definitely worth it!
From repairs to refinishing, every step was done with love and care to create a special place for our kids to enjoy for years to come.
