In recent years, there has been a resurgence in active trail riding, with more people venturing out alone or in groups to enjoy trail riding events and the great outdoors.
However, as riders reconnect with their horses outside of the arena, nerves can surface when faced with challenging trail terrain or when introducing arena-trained horses to natural environments.
Having personally experienced trail riding across various terrains in the United States, I want to share some pre-trail exercises and safety tips to help riders stay safe and confident on the trail.

Overcoming Obstacles
When faced with obstacles on the trail, it’s important to take your time and work through your horse’s fears. By gradually encouraging your horse to face and move past obstacles, you can build trust and confidence.
Whether it’s a challenging terrain or a scary object, guiding your horse with patience and positive reinforcement can help him overcome his fears and navigate the trail safely.
