When I visit people’s homes, I don’t judge their design choices because I understand the effort it takes to create a well-designed space, especially with work and kids. However, there are certain elements that can ruin a room’s ambiance and make it less enjoyable. These “room ruiners” are things that can make you not want to be in a room at all. But the good news is that they are fixable!

Recently, I noticed some room ruiners in our Airbnb, particularly the offensive bright blue bulbs over the island. It’s essential to pay attention to details like this to ensure a comfortable and welcoming space for guests.

The Issue: Bad Overhead Lighting + Lack of Lamps

One major issue that can ruin a room’s design is bad overhead lighting. In our case, the canned lights were too bright and cold, making the space feel unwelcoming. It’s important to choose the right temperature for lighting and consider adding lamps for a more cozy atmosphere.

Solution:

1. Opt for recessed lighting with temperature control.

2. If you already have installed lights, consider replacing the bulbs with warmer ones.

3. Add lamps or wall sconces to improve the overall lighting in the room.

4. For overhead fixtures, switch to warmer bulbs and adjust the wattage for a more comfortable ambiance.

It’s important to strike a balance with lighting choices to create a welcoming atmosphere in your home. Avoid excessive canned lights and opt for warmer tones for a more comfortable space.

Another issue we encountered was push-open drawers that accidentally open when touched. While this may seem like a minor annoyance, it can affect the overall experience of a space.

The Problem: Push-Drawers That Accidentally Open

If you’re dealing with push-open drawers that constantly open, consider opting for normal drawers with hardware to prevent this issue.

The Problem: Dining Chairs That Produce Loud Noises on Floors

To avoid the noise caused by dining chairs on floors, consider adding felt pads to the bottom of the chairs for a quieter experience.

Overall, paying attention to these small details can significantly enhance the comfort and enjoyment of a space. By addressing issues like lighting, drawer mechanisms, and chair noise, you can create a more pleasant environment for yourself and your guests.

It’s essential to be mindful of these design elements to ensure a welcoming and enjoyable living space. If you’re looking for more tips on improving your home’s design, feel free to reach out to us. We’re here to help!
