Blush is closely associated with the spring and summer seasons. Whether it’s a coral pop or a strawberry rush, it’s considered the ultimate warm-weather beauty essential. However, in my opinion, finding the perfect blush for winter is even more crucial. A touch of color can completely change your appearance.
Shopping for a suitable blush for the colder months can be challenging. Some formulas may be drying during this time of year, and selecting the right shade is equally important. While bright and bold colors are fun, muted tones with a hint of shimmer feel particularly fitting for the season. Luckily, the variety of blush options has expanded significantly in recent years. Below, we’ve consulted with two makeup artists for their top winter blush shades and the most effective formulas as the temperatures drop.

What to Look for in a Winter Blush
Richer formulas are often necessary during the winter to combat the cold temperatures and harsh weather conditions. Just as you switch out your skincare products, opting for a hydrating blush can be beneficial. According to celebrity makeup artist and ciele Cosmetics co-founder and CEO Nikki DeRoest, liquid and cream formulas often contain hydrating ingredients that help prevent dryness.
“Soothing ingredients like allantoin are rich in antioxidants and promote a healthy, radiant flush, making them ideal for sensitive and acne-prone skin,” she explains. Additionally, liquid and cream formulas provide a natural-looking flush with minimal effort. However, powder blushes designed to hydrate the skin while providing ample color are also available.
What Colors Are Trending
Winter calls for cozy elements, and this extends to the preferred blush shades. “This winter, there is a strong trend towards toasty terracotta and soft brown tones that create a warm flush and appear natural on the skin,” says makeup artist and senior product developer at Beauty Creations Cosmetics, Brenda Orduno. These shades can also serve as a bronzer, subtly warming the skin with a light touch of color.
Bolder hues that offer a more pronounced flush will be equally popular this season. Deep shades like plum and muted berry add depth and can help achieve a dramatic, seasonal look without going overboard. “When blended, these darker shades give the cheeks a moody, sophisticated finish that is perfect for the winter months,” adds Orduno.
