As someone who is striving to break free from perfectionism while juggling the responsibilities of being a new parent, I constantly seek a balance between maintaining a tidy home that promotes a sense of calm for my family and implementing organizational systems that are easy to sustain without draining all my energy.

The concept of a Tidy Toss is simple yet effective: instead of meticulously organizing every single item in your closet, you can simply toss small items into baskets or containers. This approach not only saves time but also helps in keeping your space clutter-free.

You can designate Tidy Toss baskets for seasonal items or small closet essentials. For example, I’ve transitioned to using baskets for storing socks, eliminating the need for pairing and rolling them after laundry.

While this method may not result in perfectly arranged items by color or size, it significantly contributes to maintaining overall tidiness with minimal effort. As Blakey mentions, “My closet stays tidy because I don’t spend the time doing unnecessary organizing… I end up tidying because it’s NOT a lot of work.”

Furthermore, the Tidy Toss technique is not limited to closets; you can apply it to various areas in your home. Whether it’s organizing kitchen utensils, personal items in the entryway, or skincare products in the bathroom, using baskets for quick tidying can be both practical and enjoyable.

Turning tidying into a game by shouting “Tidy Toss!” every time something lands in its designated basket can make the process more engaging for both adults and children. It’s a simple yet effective way to keep clutter at bay and maintain a sense of order in your living spaces.

As tempting as it may be to over-organize, finding a system that works for your unique needs and lifestyle is key. It’s important to strike a balance between organization and practicality, as emphasized by Blakey, who encourages individuals to discover what works best for them.
