Using Reclaimed Wood In The Guest Cottage

The Importance of Choosing Permanent Materials

When it comes to selecting permanent materials for our home, I approach the decision-making process with caution. I prioritize style and visual appeal, but not at the expense of functionality. Take our kitchen island, for example. Instead of opting for a typical “engineered stone topped newly made cabinet island,” we chose to repurpose an all-wood vintage store counter. While this choice was more expensive and required additional design work, the joy it brings me every day makes it worth it.

Not everything has to be a showstopper moment. For elements that don’t evoke strong aesthetic passion, I lean towards options that prioritize function, durability, ease of maintenance, affordability, or simplicity. For instance, painting our stairs instead of restoring the original wood saved us both time and money.

The Charm of Reclaimed Wood in the Guest Cottage

The wood paneling in our guest cottage is a feature I’m willing to invest in and maintain. The unique wood on the walls and ceiling exudes character and charm, despite its imperfections. We plan to sand and refinish the wood to create a uniform look, rather than painting over it.

Matching the Original Bathroom Wall

One of our current challenges is finding wood that matches the original paneled wall in the bathroom. The existing wall features 5″ tongue and groove softwood, which we aim to replicate on the remaining walls and ceiling. The goal is to maintain consistency in both appearance and quality.

Exploring Options at McGee Salvage

We visited McGee Salvage to explore reclaimed wood options for our project. While we encountered a wide selection of materials with intriguing backstories, finding a perfect match for our existing wall proved challenging. We are considering whether to use the available wood or pursue alternatives that require additional finishing work.

Striving for a Uniform Look

My vision for the guest cottage involves achieving a cohesive and visually appealing wood-clad room. I am drawn to the idea of using reclaimed wood for its character and sustainable qualities. While new wood remains a viable option, the history and unique features of reclaimed wood add a special touch to the space.

Seeking Inspiration and Quality

As we continue our search for the perfect wood panels, I prioritize not only quantity but also the quality of the grain and tone. I am open to investing in exceptional materials that elevate the space aesthetically. The richness of the wood and its overall impact on the room are key considerations in our decision-making process.
