How to Update an Old Cutting Board

I recently shared a brilliant cutting board revival trick on my Instagram account, and I believe it deserves a permanent spot on the blog. This way, you can always refer back to it whenever you need!

How to Update an Old Cutting Board

Whenever I browse through antique or thrift stores, I always come across numerous used wooden cutting boards. While they make fantastic decor pieces, I wanted to find a way to rejuvenate them and make them functional again. I managed to snag one for just $4.50 from an antique store, which is a steal compared to purchasing a new one.

The only downside of buying previously owned items is not knowing their history. Oh, the stories they could tell! I’ve often thought that if I owned an antique store, I’d encourage people to leave notes with their items. It would add a fun element to the experience!

I followed these steps to bring a previously owned cutting board back to life, but you could also use them to revive a wood cutting board you already own.

PROCESS OF UPDATING AN OLD CUTTING BOARD

STEP 1

Begin by sanding down the entire cutting board, front and back. Remove any stains and the original finish to ensure a uniform look. I love sanding off old finishes to reveal the beautiful raw wood underneath. The cutting board I worked on had artwork on one side, so sanding removed it and left both sides plain.

STEP 2

Once fully sanded, use a damp paper towel to wipe off all the dust.

STEP 3

For this project, I opted for Odie’s Oil. I’ve used it in the past and was pleased with the results. After some research, I discovered that it’s food-safe, making it perfect for a cutting board.

A little Odie’s Oil goes a long way, and one coat is sufficient. It’s non-toxic and made from natural oils and waxes. The oil saturates the wood surface and pores, preventing water seepage, stains, or bacteria growth. I also love the finished look it provides!

After applying the oil, wait around 40 minutes before buffing it to a smooth, soft finish. After 3 days, your cutting board will be ready to use!

And there you have it! A simple yet effective way to breathe new life into something you thought had seen better days. If you have any tips for reviving old items, feel free to share them!
