It’s no secret that the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) emphasizes the importance of sunscreen for everyone. Daily use of sunscreen is a crucial step in reducing the risk of skin cancer by protecting the skin from harmful UV rays. Skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or skin tone.

According to the AAD, one in five Americans is expected to develop skin cancer at some point in their lifetime. This underscores the essential nature of sun protection. Dermatologist Jeanine B. Downie, MD, recommends using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapplying it regularly. She even reapplies when indoors all day.

When it comes to layering skincare products, Dallas dermatologist Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, MD, stresses the importance of applying sunscreen as the final step in your routine. Allow the sunscreen to fully absorb into the skin before applying makeup for maximum efficacy and an even finish.

Finishing Touch

Dr. Houshmand prefers a dewy, natural look and loves layering sunscreens. She recommends EltaMD UV Clear and Colorescience sunscreen powder for easy reapplication throughout the day.

Office Hours

For daily use in the office, Dr. Downie opts for a powder SPF over lotion. She recommends ZO SPF Daily Sheer sunscreen or SkinMedica Total Defense + Repair sunscreen for reapplication.

Touching Grass

When engaging in outdoor activities, Dr. Downie layers different sunscreens for added protection. She uses Total Defense + Repair, ZO sunscreen, and ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica for her face.

Body Moves

For body protection, Dr. Downie recommends La Roche-Posay spray sunscreen, Neutrogena Beach Defense, and Sun Bum spray sunblock.

Glow Getter

Dr. Houshmand mixes EltaMD Skin Recovery sunscreen with Innbeauty Project Mineral Sun Glow sunscreen for a glowing look without foundation.

Hydration Station

Dr. Karan Lal suggests using hyaluronic acid serums as a base before applying SPF to make sunscreen application easier.

Primary School

Dr. Lal prefers liquid SPF for primary application and recommends Colorescience Flex Tinted SPF. For reapplication, he suggests using the Sunglaze Sheer Setting Mist Sunscreen by Kopari.

Compact + Control

Dr. Lal also likes the Avene Compact SPF for a matte finish that feels like makeup. He suggests using a mineral brush for reapplication to maintain the dry texture.

On Set

For a celebrity-approved sunscreen, Dr. Lal recommends the Colorscience SPF brush for a non-shiny appearance on screen.
