Kate Hudson stole the show at the Governors Awards with her stunning 1920s-inspired Valentino gown, paired with a chic Gatsby-esque bob that showcased the year’s hottest haircut trend in full red-carpet glamour. This flirty, above-the-shoulders bob, sculpted with a modern Jazz Age twist, exuded vintage allure with a contemporary edge.

However, the secret behind Hudson’s new bob was revealed by her hairstylist and magician, Marcus Francis. “We didn’t actually cut her hair,” he confessed. “It’s all about some clever tricks and illusions for the event.”

In Francis’s arsenal of products, he started by prepping Hudson’s hair with Joico Defy Damage Protective Shampoo ($26) and the KBOND20 Power Masque ($39) to create a glossy, voluminous base. He then applied Joico Dream Blowout Glass 72HR Frizz Fighter ($28) and Joico JoiWhip Design Foam ($22.50) for shine and volume.

After blow-drying and creating a deep side part, Marcus used Joico Heat Hero Glossing Thermal Protector ($24) before styling the hair into Marcel curls, setting them with Joico Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray ($22.50).

Releasing the curls, Francis sculpted them with a brush, creating soft waves and adding a final touch of Joico Curls Like Us Hydrate & Define Curl Crème Styler ($26) for shine and definition.

The end result was a radiant faux Gatsby bob that showcased the enduring popularity of the bob trend on the red carpet.
