Martha Stewart might not be wowed by my party hosting skills, but I guarantee she would have a blast. Thanksgiving hosts with spreadsheets and schedules? Now I get it. Three years ago, before our first big family gathering, Brian and I were a mess for 18 hours straight. It was fun, but chaotic. Since then, we’ve developed systems that work for gatherings of all sizes. It’s still work, but not stressful. We can have fun and clean up the next day without a headache. This is crucial for summer entertaining. As a Virgo and enneagram 7, organized, systemic fun is my favorite, and I now look forward to all our gatherings.

In a year, we host 15-18 outdoor gatherings, including fundraisers, family gatherings, and smaller groups. All our events are casual, without hired help, focusing on ease over perfection. In Portland, people prefer a relaxed and warm atmosphere, where the company and fun take center stage.

For larger groups, such as fundraisers with 60-100 people, we opt for drop-off catering or pizzas to avoid the stress of cooking for so many guests. These events focus on the experience rather than a formal meal. For smaller gatherings, potlucks are the way to go. Assigning specific dishes to guests has made the process much smoother and more enjoyable for everyone.

When it comes to food, we’ve learned that certain dishes work better for different group sizes. Burgers work best for smaller groups, while pre-marinated skewers are ideal for larger gatherings. Keeping the menu simple and manageable is key to a successful BBQ for 30-50 people.

In terms of presentation, we opt for a neutral color palette to let the food shine. Lightweight, stackable serving ware makes cleanup a breeze, and we avoid single-use plastics whenever possible. Compostable paper plates are a go-to for larger groups. Shatterproof string lights add ambiance to evening gatherings without the hassle of candles.

Game changers like fly fans, rechargeable lamps, and tongs have elevated our entertaining experience. Fly fans keep pests away, while rechargeable lamps provide soft lighting without the risk of open flames. Shatterproof string lights are a must for creating a cozy atmosphere.

In conclusion, summer entertaining should be enjoyable for both guests and hosts. By implementing practical tips and hacks, you can create a seamless and stress-free experience for everyone involved. Let me know your favorite entertaining tips and tricks!
