Senior Chief SEAL Scott Allcorn showcased his skills once again by winning the NCHA Special Operations Cutting Challenge during the Summer Spectacular event, with his family cheering him on from the audience.

Reflecting on his victory, Allcorn stated, “Last year it was, ‘Don’t fall off.’ This year was, ‘Now it’s time to prove that last year wasn’t just a fluke.'”

Allcorn, a veteran Navy SEAL with nearly 20 years of service, achieved a score of 226 aboard the gelding Royalty Smart, owned by Windy Pass.

The NCHA Special Operations Cutting Challenge is a prestigious three-day event that pairs special operations service members with NCHA trainers, providing a thrilling show for all spectators.

Following his win, Allcorn attributed his success to maintaining a clear mindset above all else.

He expressed, “Once I get on the horse, everything just melts away, and I’m able to fully focus on the task at hand. I look at the cow, cut the right ones, and position the horse correctly.”

A Friendship Years in the Making

Allcorn’s connection to the Special Operations Cutting Challenge dates back 7 years, starting with a chance conversation with a local SWAT officer in the Dallas-Fort Worth area about his love for horses. This led him to train at Clint Allen’s facility under the guidance of trainers Matt Miller and Tarin Rice.

The bond between Allcorn and Miller grew over the years, with Allcorn recognizing similarities between the cutting horse community and his SEAL team.

He explained, “That crew was similar to what I knew, the way those guys interacted with each other. Many veterans lack a sense of purpose after leaving the military, and events like this provide them with motivation and a sense of belonging.”

The Challenge serves as a therapeutic outlet for former and current service members, offering a healing path that resonates with veterans seeking a new purpose.

What Cutters and the SEALs Have in Common

Allcorn attributes his success in cutting horses to his versatile SEAL background, stating, “SEALs are jacks of all trades. We learn quickly and strive to excel in everything we do.”

He has witnessed fellow service members with no riding experience excel in the Challenge, showcasing the special operations community’s drive to master new skills.

Beyond his military ties, Allcorn’s passion for horses dates back to his childhood, and he rediscovered it about a decade ago, even in a location with limited Western riding opportunities.

Settling in Weatherford

Allcorn and his family have recently moved to Weatherford, Texas, known as the cutting horse capital of the world. This relocation has sparked new aspirations for Allcorn beyond competition.

Looking ahead to the future, Allcorn remains grateful for the support of his trainers, family, and the community that has contributed to his success in the Challenge.
