My Obsession with Vintage Lamps: A Rewiring Adventure
One of my biggest weaknesses is my tendency to impulsively buy vintage pieces without a clear plan for them. This habit has led to a collection of unique items that I struggle to find a place for. While I’ve managed to curb this behavior when it comes to furniture and other items, I still find it hard to resist vintage art, statement lamps, and rugs. These pieces can truly enhance a room and add character at a fraction of the cost of new items.
Recently, I decided to rewire three lamps that I had been using as decorative items but not as functional lighting fixtures. I took them to a local hardware store that specializes in rewiring vintage pieces. The process took 5 weeks and cost $300, which was a bit higher than I expected. While I was satisfied with the work done, I wished they had more options for vintage-style lamp parts.
The lamps I rewired included a wood Danish lamp purchased from Etsy, an Italian pottery lamp from Monticello, and two sconces from 1stDibs. Despite the cost of rewiring, I believe it was worth it to see these pieces finally function as intended.
Each lamp had its own unique charm and required different rewiring specifications. While the process was costly, I felt it was necessary to bring these vintage pieces back to life. The impact these lamps have on a room is undeniable, making the investment worthwhile.
Overall, the rewiring process was a learning experience for me. While the cost was higher than expected, I now have functional vintage lamps that add character to my home. It’s a reminder to think twice before making impulsive purchases and to consider the long-term implications of bringing vintage pieces into my space.
