A Few Years Ago I Almost Sold My Business. Here’s How It Went Down…

For those intrigued by the world of design and media, here’s a captivating tale with a surprising twist at the end. Recently, the well-loved brands Food52 and Schoolhouse Electric faced bankruptcy, causing shockwaves with abrupt layoffs and an official announcement. This turn of events spurred me to share my story.

Back in early 2021, amidst the latter part of the lockdown, I received an urgent call from Amanda Hesser, the founder of Food52. Intrigued by the acquisition of Food52 by TCG, a major venture capital firm, my interest was piqued. The call, scheduled for a Saturday morning, revealed a proposition to merge my company with Food52 and Schoolhouse Electric to create a comprehensive home design platform. The idea was enthralling, and I was eager to be part of it.

The synergy between my company and Schoolhouse Electric was undeniable. Their aesthetic resonated with me, and the thought of collaborating with them as we moved back to Portland was serendipitous. However, as negotiations progressed, the complexities of selling my company, including my personality-driven blog and social media presence, became apparent. The valuation process raised questions about the worth of my archives and the risks involved in relinquishing control.

Amidst the negotiations, a realization dawned on me – the risks and uncertainties outweighed the financial gains. Consulting with my lawyer, I made the decision to walk away from the deal, despite the excitement it initially generated. The experience left me invigorated, appreciative of my team, and confident in the path I had chosen.

Years later, witnessing the challenges faced by Food52 and Schoolhouse Electric, I felt a sense of validation in my decision. While the demise of Schoolhouse Electric seemed imminent, news of its acquisition by Hudson Valley Lighting Group brought a glimmer of hope for its revival. Reflecting on the entire episode, I realized the importance of prioritizing values over financial gains.

Ultimately, the journey of almost selling my company taught me valuable lessons and reinforced my gratitude for the autonomy and freedom I have in steering my business. As I wish Schoolhouse Electric success in its new chapter, I remain thankful for the path I chose and the support of my team and readers.
