Steve Cawthon and Brea Vardas Triumph at Cinch RSNC South Central Regional Super Sort

Steve Cawthon and Brea Vardas showcased skill, determination, and a bit of luck to secure the top prize at the Cinch RSNC South Central Regional Super Sort in Waco, Texas. They emerged victorious in the Professional’s Choice #9 Gold Shootout, sorting 35 head in 215.36 seconds and earning $11,254.

This win was a significant achievement for both competitors. For Cawthon, it added another remarkable chapter to his sorting career, which spans over three decades alongside his wife, Shelby. For Vardas, it solidified her position as one of the sport’s up-and-coming stars.

However, the journey to victory began long before they set foot in the sorting pen for the #9 event. Cawthon rode Poncho, also known as Downvalleycat, a gelding he acquired from Tim Field. Poncho’s appearance in Waco almost didn’t happen due to a recent emergency colic surgery. A massive enterolith the size of a cantaloupe was discovered inside him, requiring extensive recovery time.

Enterolith removed from Poncho in early 2026.

“We were very fortunate that he survived it,” said Cawthon. “It was a tough ordeal.” Poncho’s recovery was carefully managed, with guidance from veterinarians and limited runs to rebuild his strength. Waco marked Poncho’s fourth event back in competition.

During the Gold Shootout finals, strategy played a crucial role alongside speed. Cawthon emphasized the importance of patience in dealing with flighty cattle throughout the weekend. Their well-executed plan and teamwork led them to a first-place finish.

Vardas, who had transitioned from cutting and reined cow horse competitions to ranch sorting, found success with her horses Ziggy and Raven. Support from mentors and a focus on communication and seasoned horses contributed to their victory.

Following their triumph in Waco, Cawthon and Vardas are gearing up for the next challenge at the Professional’s Choice #9 Gold Shootout in Fort Worth. With a winning formula of patience, teamwork, and skilled horses, they are ready to tackle the competition once again.
