Have you ever encountered a situation where most people would suggest starting over instead of finding a solution to a problem? This is the dilemma I’m currently facing with my daughter’s bedroom curtains. But before I delve into the details, let me take you back about ten years to provide some context.

Back when I wasn’t a mother yet, before I made the move from Florida to California (and even before I relocated to North Carolina), I used to spend my lunch breaks scouring thrift stores like ReStore for unique finds or browsing through discounted fabric at Calico Corners. One day, I came across a fabric that wasn’t really my style, but I was captivated by it (and the price). It was a heavy linen fabric adorned with beautiful watercolor flowers. Despite not being a fan of florals or the color purple at the time, something compelled me to buy it, with a voice whispering, "Get this fabric. You’ll want it for your daughter one day."

There were no guarantees that I would have a daughter, let alone one who would appreciate this fabric. But I found myself making the purchase, acquiring enough fabric for two curtain panels measuring approximately 96 inches in length. These panels stayed stored away in a plastic container for nearly a decade, patiently waiting for a window to adorn. During each move, friends would suggest donating them, but the mere thought of parting with my future daughter’s curtains seemed absurd.

Fast forward to our last home, where my actual daughter occupied her first bedroom. The curtains were a perfect fit for the window, almost as if fate had intervened. However, upon moving to North Carolina, her new bedroom had two windows instead of one, rendering the two panels impractical. Despite this, I decided to hang them up with an added blackout lining to block out the harsh afternoon light. The end result was a less-than-ideal display that left much to be desired.

As I grappled with the disappointment of the mismatched panels, I knew something had to be done. According to design rules, curtains should be at least 1.5 times the width of the window span, if not twice. However, my panels fell short of this standard, measuring only 0.8 times the width.

Feeling determined to salvage the situation, I explored various options to transform these curtains from a disappointment to a success. Here are some of the solutions I considered:

  1. Adding Complementary Panels: Incorporating panels in colors that complement the original curtain design could enhance the overall look.
  2. Using Romans for Functionality: Stationary panels could be paired with Roman shades to add functionality while maintaining a decorative element.
  3. Adding Wide Trim to Edges: Sewing or gluing wide trim to the edges of the existing panels could increase their width and visual appeal.
  4. Incorporating Bottom Fringe: Adding long fringe to the bottom of the panels could introduce a fun and unique element.
  5. Integrating a Block of Coordinating Fabric: By adding a block of coordinating fabric, you can transform the curtains and add length if needed.

These creative solutions offer a way to breathe new life into existing curtains, showcasing the importance of exploring alternatives before giving up on something you love. Remember, with a bit of imagination and resourcefulness, you can find solutions to even the most challenging design dilemmas.
