Arlyn here. I originally wrote this post in March 2025, during a tumultuous time when corporations were reneging on their DEI commitments. Since then, the news has been consistently disheartening. Now, nearly a year later, we find ourselves questioning where our money goes and what it endorses. While I understand that not all readers share my values or goals, if you’re interested in alternatives to companies like Amazon and Target, this list may be helpful. Together, we can make a significant impact.
The conversation surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in companies has been prominent in the early months of 2025. Some businesses are doubling down on their commitments, while others are retracting them. As a person of color married to a Black man with a disabled brother, DEI from a consumer standpoint is deeply personal to me.
For a long time, I continued shopping on Amazon despite its reputation, simply because of the convenience it offered. However, the recent actions of companies like Target, which I once viewed as a more ethical choice, have made me reassess my shopping habits. It’s challenging to find alternatives to these mainstream retailers, but it’s a necessary step.
There are arguments about the impact of boycotting these companies on their workers and smaller businesses that rely on them. I spoke to a Black woman entrepreneur who lost a contract with Target due to their stance on DEI, highlighting the real-world consequences of these decisions.
Ultimately, if you’re looking to support companies that align with values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, I’ve compiled a list of 17 options. It’s important to recognize that what constitutes “better” varies for each individual, and no company is without flaws. Making conscious purchasing decisions is a complex process, but it’s worth it to ensure that your money isn’t supporting harmful practices.
“Don’t support businesses that wouldn’t hire you,” is a common saying that I often hear. Libby’s user-friendly interface makes using the app a breeze. You can easily check out and send books to your preferred e-reader, join waitlists for popular titles, play audiobooks within the app, and even make requests to your library. Best of all, it’s completely free, allowing you to expand your reading list without spending a penny. What a great find! I generally have a positive experience with the items I purchase here, especially the Kirkland Signature store brand. The towels and sheets I’ve bought have lasted a long time, which can’t always be said about other retailers. I don’t mind paying $65 a year for our family membership.
Please feel free to research these companies on websites like Goods Unite Us or Opensecrets to ensure they align with your values. If you know of any other great alternatives to Amazon or Target, please share in the comments. Thank you!
Until next time…
