As the Boston Marathon approaches next month, runners are entering the most critical phase of their training. One such runner is Becs Gentry, a beloved Peloton instructor, podcast host, and Hoka global brand ambassador with over 20 marathons under her belt. Here, she shares her race preparation essentials, advice for first-time marathoners, and more.
What marathon stands out as the most memorable for you?
“The 2019 TCS New York City Marathon is the most memorable for me. It came at a time when I was facing personal challenges, and I was physically and mentally drained. Despite not meeting my expectations, I pushed through and finished as the top ‘non-elite’ female, which was a truly rewarding experience.”
What are your must-have marathon prep items?
“During the 18-week training period, my essentials include my favorite sneakers, the Hoka Cielo X1 3.0, and instant hydration with electrolytes and magnesium for recovery. I rely on Kreatures of Habit Meal One for pre-race fueling. If not available, a simple breakfast of bread, peanut butter, and fruits suffices. For seasonal races, I take Xyzal for allergies.”
Dealing with allergies as a professional runner must be challenging. When did you realize you were affected by them?
“I’ve always had allergies but became more aware of them after moving to New York. The seasonal changes triggered my symptoms, and I struggled with congestion and fatigue. Discovering Xyzal has been a game-changer for me in managing my allergies effectively.”
How do you unwind post-race?
“After a marathon, I unwind by spending time with loved ones, enjoying a glass of champagne, using Normatec recovery boots, and savoring a nutritious meal. I prefer starting with a nutrient-packed smoothie post-race before transitioning to solid foods later in the day, depending on how my body feels.”
Any words of wisdom for first-time marathoners this year?
“To all first-time marathoners, savor the experience and avoid setting overly ambitious goals. Focus on completing the race, relishing every moment, and celebrating your hard work. Embrace the victory lap and the joy of crossing the finish line with a smile.”
