During the creation of the graphic novel Audrey Hepburn: An Illustrated Biography, illustrator Christopher Longé was deeply moved not just by Audrey Hepburn’s elegance and grace, but by her unwavering dedication to humanitarian causes. Hepburn, a UNICEF ambassador, spent her later years advocating for children worldwide and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992. Written by Eileen Hofer, this biography delves into Hepburn’s remarkable journey—from her war-torn childhood to becoming a global style icon and leaving a lasting legacy.

“Audrey Hepburn has always been a part of my life,” Longé shares. “But delving into her story for this novel, I was struck by her humanism—her innate desire to do good and bring happiness to those around her. Everyone who knew her speaks of her as an angel. Beyond her intelligence and beauty, she possessed a kind soul.”

Longé draws inspiration from Hepburn’s famous quote while working on the book: “I believe in pink. I think laughter is the best way to burn calories. I believe in kisses, lots of kisses. I think you have to be strong when things seem bad. I think happy girls are the most beautiful. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.”

Reflecting on Hepburn’s sense of style, Longé recalls how she arrived in London with little to her name but still exuded elegance. He mentions how Hepburn’s ability to transform simple pieces of clothing, like a scarf, into stylish ensembles impressed her friend Givenchy.

Longé also references a poignant poem frequently recited by Hepburn, encapsulating her essence. The poem emphasizes kindness, empathy, and the true beauty that lies within a person.

While highlighting Hepburn’s enduring beauty and style moments, Longé points out several favorites, including her iconic looks from movies like Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Funny Face. He praises Hepburn for revolutionizing women’s fashion in the 50s and leaving a timeless legacy of glamour.
