The State Department of Agriculture reported that a horse in Benton County, Oregon, has tested positive for pigeon fever. This horse was brought in from California two weeks prior to the diagnosis, with one additional horse being exposed.

EDCC Health Watch, a program by Equine Network, utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and distribute verified equine disease reports. The EDCC is an independent nonprofit organization that relies on industry donations to offer accessible infectious disease information.

About Pigeon Fever

Pigeon fever is a bacterial infection that affects cattle and horses, causing large abscesses, commonly found on the chest and under the belly. Horses contract the infection when bacteria enter through broken skin, like small scrapes or wounds. The peak season for infection is late summer through fall.

Implementing good horse health safety practices is crucial in preventing the spread of pigeon fever. These practices include:

  • Fly control;
  • Avoid sharing water buckets or equipment;
  • Avoid tying horses in high-traffic areas.

If a horse owner suspects their animal is affected, they should contact a veterinarian immediately.
