47 Years Around The Sun

As I celebrate my 47th birthday today, it’s hard to believe that I feel more like 35… except for the hair loss, brain fog, and mood swings that come with perimenopause. Despite these challenges, I feel great! Feeling both young and old is probably why they call it mid-life. Fortunately, I experienced my mid-life crisis early (between 38-42), so I don’t feel the same existential panic I used to. However, grappling with the purpose of life and aging isn’t easy. Reflecting on Daniel Pink’s insights.

A few years back, Daniel Pink delved into the concept of regret in his book The Power of Regret, exploring the common regrets people have at the end of their lives. He identified four universal regrets based on the submissions of 5,000 Americans and 16,000 individuals worldwide. Let’s delve into each of these regrets and how they resonate with my own life based on Pink’s research.

“Foundation Regrets”

These are the regrets related to health and financial stability. Taking care of health and finances may seem mundane and tedious, but it plays a crucial role in our overall well-being. Many individuals nearing the end of their lives wish they had prioritized their health and saved more money to avoid relying on others financially.

In terms of financial planning, my husband and I have taken significant steps to secure our future, including investments, life insurance, and retirement savings. On the health front, I acknowledge that while I maintain some healthy habits like exercise and a balanced diet, there’s room for improvement, especially in areas like dental health and reducing alcohol consumption.

“Boldness Regrets”

Boldness regrets encompass the desires we never pursued, such as changing careers, starting a business, or taking risks in personal endeavors. As we age, fear often holds us back from embracing new opportunities.

While I sometimes struggle with the fear of stepping into the unknown, my challenge lies in balancing multiple interests and commitments. It’s crucial not to postpone pursuing our passions and dreams, as the older we get, the harder it becomes to take bold risks.

“Moral Regrets”

Moral regrets revolve around actions that cause harm or regret, such as unethical behavior, deceit, or manipulation. These regrets stem from the impact on others rather than personal guilt.

I strive to make ethical decisions and uphold moral values, yet there are instances where I reflect on past actions with a sense of remorse. It’s essential to approach challenging decisions thoughtfully and envision how they align with our values in the long run.

“Connection Regrets”

Connection regrets involve neglected relationships that weigh heavily on us, particularly during difficult times. Maintaining meaningful connections with friends, family, and loved ones is vital to avoid feelings of regret and longing.

I’m currently working on repairing neglected relationships, acknowledging the importance of nurturing these bonds amidst life’s busyness. It’s easy to postpone addressing relationship issues, but understanding the significance of these connections helps me prioritize reconciliation and communication.

Reflecting on these universal regrets serves as a reminder to focus on personal growth, relationships, and well-being. As I celebrate another year of life, I strive to make choices that will make my future self proud.

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Your support means the world to me, and I look forward to continuing to share this space with you for years to come.
