What Patients Wish They Knew Before Starting a GLP-1

GLP-1 medications are often seen as a simple solution: start the shot, lose weight, move on. However, those actually taking them have a more complex story to tell. It involves learning curves, unexpected side effects, emotional changes, and lessons that only become apparent once you are deeply involved in the process.

To gain insight into what patients wish they had known earlier, we asked members of a GLP-1 support group a simple question: What do you wish you knew before starting? Their responses shed light on important aspects that may not always be discussed in appointments but become crucial once you are in the midst of it.

Hair Loss Prevention Is Important

Hair loss and thinning were frequent topics of discussion, with many expressing regret about not addressing it sooner. They realized that changes in calorie intake and nutrients can impact hair growth cycles, and waiting until hair loss starts can slow down the recovery process.

“I wish I had started taking something like Nutrafol before or right when I began the GLP-1 journey,” says Lauren S. “I waited until I was already losing hair, and it took a while to see growth back.”

Others shared that starting early helped them avoid the panic that comes with visible hair shedding. One member mentioned that being proactive with a hair regimen helped prevent further loss. The key takeaway was that prevention is less distressing than having to repair later on.

Finding the Right GLP-1 Dose Is a Process

Patients emphasized that finding the right dosage is not a one-size-fits-all process. Listening to how their body responds, rather than strictly following a timeline, led to better outcomes with fewer side effects.

“This medication has a long tail that you can ride for weeks,” says Mary D. “Sensitivity varies, and not everyone benefits from increasing doses quickly.”

Others echoed this sentiment, noting that increasing the dosage too soon led to fatigue and nausea. They emphasized the importance of adjusting based on individual responses rather than sticking to a rigid schedule.

Nutrition Requires Balance

While protein intake was a top priority for many, focusing solely on protein goals led to overlooking other essential aspects of nutrition such as fiber, hydration, and food quality.

“Protein is crucial, but we should also pay attention to fiber intake,” says Karina M.

Some learned the hard way that relying too heavily on protein bars and shakes could lead to digestive issues. They emphasized the importance of natural food sources and a balanced diet.

Hydration Is Key

Many patients highlighted the importance of staying hydrated while on GLP-1 medications. Reduced appetite can make it easy to forget about fluid intake, which can exacerbate symptoms like fatigue, nausea, and dizziness.

“I got sick for a few days because I didn’t focus on hydration or eating well,” says Terry F.

They also noted that individual hydration needs vary, and electrolyte supplements may not always be necessary.

Progress Is Not Always Linear

Patients shared their experiences of initial rapid weight loss followed by periods of stalls or small gains, which often triggered anxiety. They stressed the importance of understanding that progress can be erratic without signifying failure.

“My losses were all over the place, but it added up to 60 pounds in the end,” says Klaudia L.

Muscle Loss Should Be Considered

Some patients focused solely on weight loss and overlooked the potential for muscle loss. Understanding that muscle loss can accompany rapid weight loss was a significant revelation for them.

“About 25 percent of weight loss comes from muscle on average,” says Dina P. “Once I stopped severe calorie restriction, my body composition improved significantly.”

They also noted that fatigue could impact physical activity and muscle preservation, emphasizing the need to fuel workouts properly.

Tracking Progress Is Helpful

Many patients regretted not tracking their progress through photos and measurements. Documenting progress provided motivation during slower periods and served as a reminder of how far they had come.

“Collect all your data in the beginning. It’s difficult to see progress in real life, but seeing it on paper keeps you motivated,” advises Kylie A.

She also reminded others to show compassion towards their past selves and appreciate the journey they have undertaken.

The Power of Silencing Food Noise

Many individuals found a surprising emotional shift when they began to quiet the noise surrounding food. Samantha S. expressed, “I didn’t realize how much control food had over me.” Others mentioned feeling calmer, more present, and less reactive in their daily lives. For these individuals, this mental shift was more significant than any changes on the scale.
