In Gallatin County, Montana, the attending veterinarian has confirmed that one horse has tested positive for pigeon fever, with 25 horses being exposed to the disease. As a precautionary measure, the affected horses are currently under quarantine.

EDCC Health Watch is a program by Equine Network that uses information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to produce and distribute verified equine disease updates. The EDCC is a non-profit organization supported by industry donations, offering accessible infectious disease information.

About Pigeon Fever

Pigeon fever is a bacterial infection that affects both cattle and horses, often leading to large abscesses, typically found on the chest and under the belly. Horses usually contract the infection through broken skin, like small cuts or wounds, with the peak season for infection being late summer through fall.

Maintaining good horse health practices is crucial in preventing the spread of pigeon fever. These practices include:

  • Implementing fly control measures;
  • Avoiding sharing water buckets or equipment; and
  • Avoiding tying horses in areas with high traffic.

If a horse owner suspects their animal may be affected, they are advised to contact their veterinarian immediately.
