Emergency Winter Weather Prep – Horse and Rider

When unexpected severe winter weather strikes, it’s crucial to have a plan in place to protect your horse from potential health issues. Whether you’re bracing for plummeting temperatures, heavy snowfall, or ice storms, here are essential steps to take.

1. Increase Feed

Your horse relies on feed as fuel.

As temperatures drop and winter weather sets in, consider increasing your horse’s feed intake to help him stay warm. Splitting feedings throughout the day, offering warm mashes, and feeding heavier in the evening can all aid in maintaining his body temperature.

2. Modify Water Management

Add a salt block or source near water to encourage drinking, and consider electrolytes in water sources. Monitor for signs of dehydration, break ice on tanks regularly, and ensure water sources are easily accessible.

For senior horses, provide stable footing, clear paths, and warm, dry shelter. Keep hooves free of ice balls, maintain accessible feed and water locations, and use products to prevent ice buildup.

4. Make Blanket Preparations

If you use blankets, ensure they fit well, are clean, and in good condition. Keep blankets dry and easily accessible, and check for any rubbing or hot spots on your horse regularly.

5. Position Emergency Supplies

Store feed and emergency supplies in easily accessible and covered areas. Have spare halters, lead ropes, and water buckets on hand, and be prepared to move horses quickly if needed. Stay informed of weather forecasts and share emergency plans with others.
