In Defense Of TVs Over Fireplaces – A Friendly Rebuttal To Orlando’s Hatred Of That Very Thing

One rainy night, I was cozied up in bed watching Love is Blind and reading Orlando’s new sub-stack, The Lost Arrow. His hilarious rant about TV over fireplaces got me thinking. While I agree that in an ideal world, a separate TV room is best, sometimes that’s not an option. So why not consider having a TV over the fireplace? Here are some reasons why it might actually work:

First, if you don’t have any other choice and really want to watch TV in that room, why not make it work? A low TV over the fireplace can be a practical solution. And if the TV is positioned right, it can actually look good, especially in rooms where space is limited.

Second, the height of the TV matters. It shouldn’t strain your neck to watch TV, so finding the right balance is key. A TV at the right height can make all the difference in how comfortable it is to watch.

Third, consider the room layout. A high TV over a fireplace in a bedroom can actually be a good thing, especially if you enjoy watching TV in bed. Having both focal points on the same wall can create a sense of symmetry that many find appealing.

Fourth, if you prefer symmetry over split focal points, having the TV and fireplace on the same wall can be a good design choice. It’s all about finding a balance that works for the room and your personal preferences.

Lastly, if you’ve prioritized windows over wall space, there are still ways to make a TV over fireplace setup work. Whether it’s through a shared focal point design or a less formal fireplace, there are options to consider.

In the end, the key is to make your home work for you. While some may argue against having a fireplace or a TV in certain rooms, it’s ultimately about what brings you joy and functionality. So if a TV over the fireplace makes sense for you, go for it!
