I am an unabashed lover of romance – precisely because of the reasons why “critics” find them unbearable. Yes, they often follow well-worn tropes (enemies to lovers, fake boyfriend, office romance, friends to lovers, etc), featuring impossibly attractive characters who always find their way to a happy ending. And you know what? That’s perfectly okay with me. Of course, I appreciate a fresh plot as well, and I can be quite discerning because there are so many romance stories out there with weak writing and lackluster chemistry. Many of them lean too heavily on the “com” aspect when what we really crave is the “rom”. So, consider me your go-to friend when it comes to all things romance – be it books, TV shows, or movies. Trust me, skip Anora, Baby Girl, All of You, or the Materialists on your next date night (despite what the critics say) unless you want to feel a bit queasy afterwards. Instead, listen to my recommendations for the best rom-coms ever:)
Anne Hathaway as a stunning 40-year-old being courted by Hollywood’s next leading man, Nicholas Galitzine (a personal crush of mine). If you’re not familiar with him yet, he starred in the pop musical film of Cinderella and is an incredibly compelling actor. The writing, the music, the acting, the steamy chemistry… it’s a solid 15/10. Just a heads up, there are 2-3 rather steamy scenes, so maybe not one to watch with your parents or tweens. It’s fresh, smart, and I’ve watched it a dozen times (often while flying and working).
At first glance, this one might seem a bit cheesy, but once you realize it’s a modern take on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, everything falls into place. Packed with follies and misunderstandings, especially at the start, this movie truly shines with Glenn Powell, Sydney Sweeney, and a fantastic supporting cast set against the backdrop of Australia. It exudes Nancy Meyers vibes but tailored for a Gen Z audience. The chemistry between the leads is palpable, and the writing is hilariously on point. I’ve revisited this gem five times already.
One of the latest hits that’s been making waves, and my husband and I absolutely adored it. Be prepared for a tearjerker at the beginning due to the poignant sisterly relationship (trigger warning). Stellar performances, spot-on chemistry, and a picturesque setting in San Francisco make this movie a standout. Just make sure to have some tissues handy.
