Why We Chose A Clover Lawn Instead Of Grass (This Time)

The decision to have a clover lawn instead of traditional turf has sparked a lot of discussion. While some experts praise clover as a great alternative to grass lawns, others warn against its potential to take over and ruin existing landscaping. As someone who wanted a clover lawn for a long time, I’ve done my research and found that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Clover has a rich history – once beloved by farmers, then demonized as a weed by herbicide companies. Despite the mixed opinions, we decided to go for a clover lawn in one area of our property, and today I’ll share why and how I feel about it.

The Argument Against Grass Lawns

There is a growing movement against traditional grass lawns due to their high maintenance, monoculture nature, resource depletion, and use of harmful chemicals. The “no-lawn” movement suggests alternatives like pea gravel and low-drought shrubs, but for many families, a clover lawn offers a practical and eco-friendly solution.

  1. Grass lawns require daily watering and weekly mowing, making them high maintenance.
  2. They create a monoculture that is not conducive to biodiversity.
  3. They deplete resources, especially water.
  4. They are often treated with harmful chemicals like fertilizers and herbicides.

Clover lawns, on the other hand, offer a range of benefits such as low maintenance, eco-friendliness, attractiveness to pollinators, and affordability. They are soft, cool, and evergreen, requiring minimal water and mowing once established.

The Pros and Cons of Clover Lawns

While some experts caution against clover lawns taking over and choking out other plants, others see it as a natural and eco-friendly choice. The key is to understand the seasonal care rhythm of clover lawns and ensure proper maintenance to keep them thriving.

Our Experience With Clover Lawns

After much deliberation, we decided to go for a clover lawn in one area of our property. The process involved professional demoing, soil preparation, and seeding. The result has been a lush, green, and natural-looking lawn that requires minimal maintenance and supports pollinators.

We are thrilled with the outcome and believe that clover lawns are a sustainable and beautiful alternative to traditional grass lawns. They blend seamlessly into our space, providing a natural and inviting environment for both us and the wildlife around us.
