As the summer season approaches, many of us find ourselves traveling and unable to bring our pets along. When leaving our cats in the care of someone we trust, it can be overwhelming to ensure everything is in order for their well-being. Do they have all they need? Will they be comfortable? Does the pet sitter have the necessary information? Having a checklist can be helpful in preparing your kitty for their stay with a reliable friend or daycare.

#1 – Emergency Information

While we hope for the best, being prepared is crucial for the health and safety of your cat when you’re away. Provide your recent contact details to the pet sitter or daycare, along with information on your regular veterinarian and the nearest emergency clinic. It’s also wise to share a trusted friend or relative’s contact information for additional support in case of an emergency. Consider leaving a credit card on file for emergencies or provide this information to the pet sitter. Inform your vet about your absence and the alternate caretaker for your cat.

#2 – Proper Identification

Ensuring your cat has proper identification is essential when you’re away. A collar and ID tag can help in case your cat goes missing. Consider microchipping your cat for added security, as it allows any vet or shelter to scan and contact you if your cat is found. Having proper identification can lead to a swift reunion if your cat gets lost.

#3 – Food & Treats

Provide your cat with their regular food and treats to maintain their diet and keep them occupied. Offering long-lasting chew treats can help alleviate stress and keep your cat entertained while you’re away from home.

#4 – Toys

Pack your cat’s favorite toy to provide comfort and entertainment during their stay. Leaving out toys for your cat and the pet sitter to play together can keep your cat engaged and happy while you’re away.

#5 – Bed or Blanket

Bring along your cat’s special bed or blanket to create a familiar and cozy environment for them. A worn t-shirt with your scent can also offer comfort to a nervous kitty. Providing a sense of home can help your cat relax and feel at ease during your absence.
