If you have a dog, you may have noticed that they sometimes develop eye boogers and tear stains. It’s common to worry about these issues, but they are usually natural occurrences in most dogs. In this article, we will discuss the reasons why dogs may have these problems and provide tips to reduce them.

Why Do Dogs’ Eyes Tear Up?

Just like humans, dogs’ eyes tear up to clean and lubricate the eyes. The discharge is usually clear or slightly gray and should not cause any irritation. Reddish brown staining around the eyes is from porphyrins, iron-containing molecules in tears and saliva.

Why Can There Be Tear Staining Around a Dog’s Eyes?

The rust color staining around a dog’s eyes is caused by iron molecules in porphyrins, present in tears. This staining is more noticeable in light-colored dogs but can occur in any breed due to the natural shape of canine eyelids.

Why Are There Boogers in a Dog’s Eyes?

Boogers in a dog’s eyes are a natural occurrence caused by dust and pollutants collecting in tears. Playing outside on windy days can lead to more eye boogers. However, excessive boogers could indicate a health issue.

1. Allergies

Allergies to pollen or other environmental factors can cause dogs to develop eye boogers. Contact a vet for treatment if you suspect allergies in your pet.

2. Eye Irritant

If your dog gets foreign particles in their eye, it can lead to the formation of boogers. Contact a vet if tearing persists.

3. Dry Eyes

Insufficient tear production can result in thick eye discharge. Consult a vet for appropriate treatment.

4. Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, can cause eye boogers due to irritation in the eye membranes.

5. Breed-Specific Issues

Some dog breeds are predisposed to eye problems due to their facial structure. Breeds like Pugs may experience eye issues due to incomplete eyelid closure.

6. Other Health Issues

Health conditions such as glaucoma, eyelid growths, and eye ulcers can lead to increased tearing and eye booger production.

When Should I Contact a Veterinarian?

If you notice abnormal tear production or eye boogers in your dog, it’s advisable to consult a vet. Redness, swelling, increased discharge, or excessive pawing at the face are signs to seek veterinary care immediately.
